Online Windrush Workshops 6th-8th July

Learning Through The Arts will be running online workshops as part of Children’s Art Week, a UK-wide programme run by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education.

Sessions will be delivered live via Zoom and will tell the story of Windrush generation’s journey to the UK through three exciting crafts.

Monday 6th July 10.00- 10.45 am: Make Your Own Empire Windrush

Learn about the Windrush Generation and the 492 people who journeyed from the Caribbean to the UK in 1948 through making and decorating your own Empire Windrush ship.

Tuesday 7th July 10.00- 10.45 am: Craft A Porthole

Reflect on the Windrush generation’s journey from the Caribbean to the UK by making your own ship porthole. Consider what it would have felt like to make such a long journey, and what you might have been able to see as you looked out of the ship’s windows.

Wednesday 8th July 10.00- 10.45 am: Create A Welcome Flag

Celebrate the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948 by making a welcome flag to greet the travellers. Imagine how they would have felt after their long journey to a new country and create a welcome flag to greet them when they arrive at Tilbury Docks.
